Natadera Temple

Natadera Temple was founded in 717 by the monk Taicho. It worships the deity of Mt. Hakusan and enshrines a Thousand-Armed Kannon within a cave. Since ancient times, the caves have been likened to a mother's womb, making this a sacred site for "Tainai-kuguri" (passing through the womb), a ritual believed to purify sins and grant spiritual rebirth. Renamed from Iwaya-dera to Natadera by Emperor Kazan in the Heian period, the complex was rebuilt by Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of the Kaga Domain, after being destroyed in medieval wars. Today, it features seven designated Important Cultural Properties and a celebrated garden.
