Hida Shirakawa-go

This beautiful village of gasshō-zukuri farmhouses—an iconic Japanese rural landscape—was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976 and, together with Gokayama (Toyama), was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
