Map“Iroha Sōan” preserves the residence where artist Kitaōji Rosanjin once lived, displayed as it was at the time. You can view his studio, study, and the irori hearth room. The renovated earthen storehouse serves as a gallery exhibiting his works. The local patrons of Yamashiro Onsen recognized Rosanjin’s talent before he became famous. Here he learned ceramics from the first-generation potter Suda Seika, a fellow tea enthusiast. While producing carved signboards, he frequented Seika’s kiln and devoted himself to ceramics. Yamashiro can truly be called the place where Rosanjin’s genius blossomed.
