Standing on a hill overlooking Yamanaka Onsen, this ancient Shingon sect temple is revered as the guardian of the hot springs and is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki. It houses a scroll of its history and Basho's "forgotten walking stick," and features the "Kanrosui" (sweet water) spring within its grounds.
