Kitamaebune were trading ships active in the Sea of Japan from the late Edo to Meiji periods, connecting Osaka and Hokkaido and transporting vast wealth and culture. Housed in a shipowner's residence built in 1877 (a city-designated cultural property), the museum features shining lacquered pillars and exhibits navigation tools, ship chests, and votive ship paintings.
