Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine
Ataka Sumiyoshi Jinja

Worshipped since ancient times at the northern port of Ataka, Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine (affectionately known as "Ataka no Sumiyoshi-san") boasts a history of over 1,200 years. Based on the legend of the "Ataka Barrier" associated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Benkei, it is revered as Japan's only guardian deity for "breaking through difficult barriers." Many worshipers visit to pray for business success, passing exams, sports victories, and artistic improvement. Visitors can view raised cloth pictures and woodblock prints related to the play "Kanjincho," tour the Ataka Barrier ruins and literary monuments, and enjoy the Ataka Festival (boat float parade) held from September 7th to 9th.
