Echizen Ōno Castle was built by Kanamori Nagachika, one of Oda Nobunaga’s elite retainers known as the Akahoro-shū (Red Cloak Corps). Inside, exhibits feature heirlooms from successive lords. Under certain weather conditions, a sea of clouds blankets the Ōno Basin, leaving the castle appearing to float—hence its nickname, the “Castle in the Sky.” It was also selected for the “Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles,” drawing many visitors.
