Mikatagoko (Five Lakes of Mikata)

Mikatagoko—“the Five Lakes of Mikata”—is the collective name for Lakes Mikata, Suigetsu, Suga, Kugushi, and Hiruga spanning Mihama and Wakasa in Fukui Prefecture. Because each lake differs in water quality and depth, they appear in distinct shades of blue, earning the nickname “the five-colored lakes.” The 11.2 km Mikatagoko Rainbow Line (prefectural road) offers sweeping views of the five lakes and the Sea of Japan.
