Higashi Chaya District

One of Kanazawa’s most iconic areas, the Higashi Chaya District features rows of lattice-fronted teahouses and stone-paved streets, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Wander shops and cafés selling wagashi, crafts, and more—kimono strolls are popular. At “Shima” (a National Important Cultural Property), tour an Edo-period teahouse and enjoy matcha with a garden view. “Kaikaro,” Kanazawa’s largest teahouse, displays a gold-leaf tatami tea room, Wajima lacquer staircase, and Kaga Yūzen textiles; it also has a café and shop with sweets and original items.
